Karaage Hand Roll – Crispy chicken breast with sushi rice and spicy mayonnaise
This wasn’t anything spectacular (each of the food items at the Japan Booth have been disappointing this year (spicy hand roll and sukiyaki beef pan), such a shame because we typically find quite a bit to really like here. See pork kakuni and tuna & salmon sensation.).
Basically smaller than usual chicken fingers, which were a bit dry.
The sauce wasn’t spicy per se, it was a little bit sweet and a TINY bit spicy, but the sweet notes were most prominent.
This is probably a good “gateway” sushi for less adventurous eaters.
Overall, we didn’t like the presentation of the hand rolls (actually, these aren’t what we’re used to seeing at sushi bars, usually called temaki), they were sort of floppy and difficult to share.
We thought that this dish paired better with the Junmai sake (Kikusui Super Dry Junmai).
Scores? scale of 1-10 (1=never ever again and 10=gotta have this 2 or 3 more times) – nora gives it a 4, nick gives it a 4, average 4/10.
