Mexico Pavilion Shrimp Tacos, 2011 Epcot International Food & Wine Festival

For some reason I try “fish” tacos frequently.  Well, I try them as often as I find them. Yet, none compare to what my mind/taste say they should be.  There is always some freshness missing.  The shrimp tacos at the Mexican Pavilion still did not satisfy.

Nora explained to me that a seafood taco should be served with cabbage as opposed to lettuce.  If I said the cabbage was the best tasting part of this taco, would you be surprised?

The shrimp were way over-cooked.  Even though the cabbage was cold, the two sauces were too “tepid”.  Look closely at the above photo and you’ll see that the guacamole is “weeping” on the flour tortilla.  The chipotle lime mayo could have been any store brand mayo – virtually flavorless.  I know that every booth tries to not overwhelm the taste buds but there are some people (like me) who want flavors in their food.

To give Mexico the benefit of the doubt, I had these shrimp tacos immediately after the Sanaa Culinary Demo where we had spicy Durban style chicken (Chef Bob says it is spiciest dish served at Disney).  But still, tacos are quick and easy – a perfect street food.  The unadveturous (or those who don’t like spicy) will probably not try Mexican food.  Will this year’s food and wine festival be yet another disappointment with the food quality?  We’ll be sampling lots of dishes over the next 6 weeks.  We’ll give them all a chance to prove that good food can be served on the street (causeway) of the World Showcase.
