Breakfast at The Wave, Contemporary Resort

We went over to the monorail resorts recently for a “self-guided holiday photo tour” – basically, we wanted to enjoy the decorations, take lots of photos, and grab a cupcake for breakfast. We didn’t know that they don’t have cupcakes out in the mornings;

we tried at the Polynesian (our first stop, we each got a cup of Kona coffee but no cupcakes were to be found),

we tried at the Grand Floridian (no cupcakes there either, we couldn’t even figure out where to find cupcakes at GF),

so we hopped on the monorail and tried at the Contemporary (dangit, no cupcakes there either and nora really wanted the cool mint cupcake that she saw on The Disney Food Blog’s twitter)

By now we were HUNGRY and we hadn’t even started taking photographs. Nora remembered that Sarah & Matt from EatingWDW have very positive things to say about grabbing breakfast at the Wave (three posts! 1, 2, 3) and that it’s easy to get a seat there… it was 10:30 and we went right over!

We were seated immediately and soon our server, Ashley, came over and took our orders for coffee. She was the perfect combination of attentive (but not in your face) and informative – we’re going to ask for her when we go back… and yes, we’ll be going back to the Wave for breakfast (“its the most important meal of the day” says nick).

Nick ordered the “Spinach, Tomato, and Feta Cheese Scrambled Eggs with breakfast potatoes and a biscuit,” while Nora ordered the “Eggs Benedict topped with Key Lime Hollandaise” – and we decided to get a side of “Tillamook Cheddar Cheese Grits with Nueske’s Smoked Bacon” to share. Nick was hoping that the spinach would be mixed into the scrambled eggs, but Ashley told him that the spinach is on the side.

nick’s breakfast

Wowsa, this was GOOD and HUGE (it was $2 less than nora’s breakfast and about twice as much food). There was a hearty portion of wilted spinach – yay for vegetables. The tomatoes were fresh and the feta was tasty. The potatoes seemed to be roasted rather than fried (another plus). The biscuit was your standard Walt Disney World biscuit – nothing to write home about.

nora’s breakfast

These eggs were perfectly poached, the multigrain english muffin was tender and moist (almost like a toasted pancake rather than a muffin), and the Key Lime hollandaise sauce was super yummy. Problem is, nick’s looked so good that next time it’s not going to be eggs benedict for nora… it’s going to be scrambled eggs.

We both agreed that it would be easy to “plus” nick’s breakfast – for us, make it scrambled egg whites, substitute plain grits for the potatoes, and get a multigrain english muffin instead of the biscuit.

Are you wondering about the grits? Here they are…

extra creamy grits

The grits were very creamy with a chunky texture (real grits, not instant grits), the bacon was plentiful and the cheddar cheese was tasty. In retrospect we should have mixed it all together as soon as we finished with the photos – as the cheese cooled it was hard to take a spoonful without stealing the entire mass of toppings. As we said before, these grits (minus the cheese and bacon) will be an agreeable substitute for the roasted potatoes on our next visit.

The Wave gets a huge thumbs up from us for breakfast!
