We were bound and determined to have the Fisherman’s Pie from the Ireland Marketplace this year… we were just waiting and hoping for a cooler evening to have it (you know, somehow fisherman’s pie doesn’t sound appetizing in the blazing Florida heat)…
We’ve had this numerous times over the last 12 years, sometimes we’ve been very impressed and sometimes we’ve been slightly disappointed…
This time, you could color us very disappointed…
There was a strong note of black pepper, the broth seemed to have some tomato product in it (what?!), and the potatoes were just bland (they didn’t even taste like potatoes).
The dish was too sweet, we found 3 minuscule shrimp and one equally small, very tough piece of over-cooked lobster.
This dish has definitely been changed over the years – and we can’t say that it’s been for the better (of course, maybe we just have strange tastebuds).
I’m not even sure that we want to give this another shot next year… I’m confident that we won’t be trying it again in 2013.
On a brighter note, the Guinness was the best beer we had on this visit to Epcot… Sort of pitiful that ubiquitous Guinness was the best thing that evening.
The fisherman’s pie is always a favorite for me. I only had it once this year, but it was a highlight of the day. I didn’t notice much shrimp in mine, but I did get some large pieces of lobster and scallop. I thought the lobster sauce was more flavorful than the one I’d had at Be Our Guest the night before. The bit of acidity from the tomatoes may have helped that, actually. At Be Our Guest I tasted no flavor other than cream. I didn’t notice much difference between this year and previous years, but maybe that’s just *my* taste buds, haha!
I have to confess, Kevin Dundon & Raglan Road have spoiled me re: mash potato as a top layer to food. These seemed too slippery (again, it could have been that we just had poor luck).
On thinking about it, you’re right re: tomatoes in thee sauce, the acidity is helpful to cut the richness (we just weren’t expecting it).
